A memorandum of understanding has been signed between OCP Africa, which is part of OCP Nutricrops, and the Zambian Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). This agreement aims to investigate fresh opportunities for partnership focused on enhancing agricultural output and environmental stewardship across Zambia and wider regions.
The signing ceremony took place in Lusaka and featured Hon. Reuben Mtolo Phiri, MP, who serves as the Minister of Agriculture; His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Kalakhi, the ambassador from the Kingdom of Morocco to Zambia; Mr. Siazongo Siakalenga, deputy secretary to the cabinet for finance and economic development; Mr. Mohamed Hettiti, CEO of OCP Africa; and Mr. Cornwell Muleya, CEO of IDC. Also present were high-ranking government officials, members of the IDC board, delegates from the private sector, and representatives of the OCP Africa team.
This collaboration stems from OCP Africa’s dedication to advancing agricultural transformation throughout the continent. The initiative aims at promoting comprehensive, inventive, and regionally tailored approaches that enhance food security and boost socioeconomic progress. This will be achieved through better availability of premium fertilizers and essential farming supplies, key elements needed to elevate crop outputs and augment farmers’ earnings.
The Memorandum of Understanding establishes a strategic plan aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture in Zambia and surrounding areas. Central to this collaboration is the creation of an extensive commercial farm designed to function both as a production center and a focal point for innovation and experimentation. Through the implementation of tailored fertilizers and cutting-edge farming methods, the commercial farm aims to produce valuable knowledge and procedures that can be expanded upon and modified to support smaller farms. This initiative seeks to enhance overall productivity and environmental stewardship throughout the entire agricultural sector.
An essential part of this project involves producing green ammonia, which will depend on renewable energy sources to substantially decrease the carbon emissions linked to fertilizer production. This effort closely matches IDC and OCP Africa’s overarching dedication to adopting sustainable methods and protecting the environment.
The pact encompasses strategic plans for supplying raw materials aimed at maintaining a consistent and dependable stream of top-notch components for fertilizer manufacturing. Furthermore, both sides will initiate skill-enhancement initiatives to boost technical, administrative, and practical competencies among nearby populations, aiding the embrace of improved and eco-friendly farming techniques.
The Memorandum of Understanding outlines four primary fields for cooperation, showcasing an all-encompassing and progressive strategy towards farming advancement:
- Big Commercial Farm and Showcase Field
- Raw Material Supply
- Capacity Building
- Steam Blending Plant Development
“We are thrilled to collaborate with IDC on this strategic endeavor, underscoring our joint dedication to fostering sustainable agriculture in Africa. Through the integration of our knowledge and assets, we strive to equip Zambian farmers with the necessary instruments to boost their output and elevate their quality of life,” stated Mohamed Hettiti, CEO of OCP Africa.
Today, we aren’t just finalizing an agreement—we’re shaping Zambian history. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) represents a pivotal collaboration destined to go down as a critical juncture in our nation’s progress. Partnering with OCP Africa, a leading global fertilizer company, heralds a fresh chapter marked by expansion, autonomy, and economic well-being within Zambia’s farming industry. Such groundbreaking alliances occur rarely, and this one holds immense importance for our country. As stated by Cornwell Muleya, CEO of IDC.
OCP Africa and IDC will move forward with a detailed feasibility assessment to ensure the effective implementation of the MoU. Through their combined expertise and resources, both parties are confident that this partnership will unlock new opportunities for sustainable agricultural growth and value creation in Zambia and other African countries.
