Airtel Kenya plans to carry out a system upgrade for its Airtel Money platform this weekend with the intention of providing improved services to its clients.

The system enhancement implemented by Airtel Kenya, where their subscribers currently spend longer durations on individual on-network calls compared to those of Safaricom, is scheduled to commence on Saturday, May 3 at 11 PM and conclude on Sunday, May 4 at 11 AM.

The company stated that throughout the maintenance duration, all Airtel Money services will be inaccessible, likely causing disruptions for customers.

“The final stage is set for May 3rd, 2025, starting at 11 pm until May 4th, 2025, at 11 am. Throughout this period, all Airtel Money services will be inaccessible. Please be aware that this outage might lead to some short-term disruptions, and we genuinely regret any inconvenience caused,” stated the telecom company in an announcement published on their X profile on Tuesday, April 29.

What is the reason for Airtel Kenya conducting system maintenance?

The company stated in the notification that they were executing the final stage of their mobile money system upgrade to boost user experience and strengthen their ability to provide more advanced products and services.

As compensation for customers affected by the Airtel Money shutdown during the upgrade period, upon restoration of service, all transfers from banks to Airtel Money, bill payments using PayBill, and withdrawals made through agents will earn you full cashback equivalent to the transaction fees in form of airtime up until Sunday, May 4th at midnight.

“We appreciate your involvement as we keep innovating and expanding alongside you,” stated the firm in an announcement emailed to clients on Tuesday, April 29.

Airtel Money has recorded 3 million customers.

Other updates reveal that Airtel Kenya will be suspending its mobile money services for an upgrade beginning this coming Saturday, May 3rd. This development comes just a short time after statistics from the company’s regulatory body indicated a notable rise in the number of Airtel users.

According to a report issued by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), during the period from October to December 2024, Airtel Money saw an increase in subscribers, reaching three million users, thereby strengthening its position compared to Safaricom’s M-Pesa service.

In the reviewed timeframe, Airtel Money’s market share rose to 8.8%, up from the 7.6% recorded in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024/25.

In the report, CA stated that SIM subscriptions reached 21,517,842, equating to a market share of 30.15%. This figure was up from the 20,740,558 subscribers recorded at the end of the first quarter in September 2024.
