Trump Renames Another Ocean to Strengthen Ties with Arab Nations

President
Donald Trump
Is anticipated to reveal that he plans to rename an additional body of water during his rapid journey to the Middle East scheduled for next week.

On Tuesday evening, The Associated Press reported that Trump plans to assert that the United States will henceforth designate the body of water currently known as the Persian Gulf either as the Arabian Gulf or simply as the Gulf of Arabia.

Although the term ‘Persian Gulf’ dates back to the 16th century, several nations in the contemporary Middle Eastern region often refer to it as either the Gulf of Arabia or sometimes as the Arabian Gulf.

They have done this to demonstrate their influence over Iran.

This has annoyed Iran, which was previously known as Persia, with its government threatening legal action.

Before his visit to the Middle East, Trump claimed that an important announcement would be made soon.

“We’re about to share an incredibly significant announcement with you all. It’s going to be monumental—about as big as they come—and I’m not revealing when we’ll unveil it,” stated the president during a Tuesday Oval Office question-and-answer session with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

“And it’s highly encouraging. This will be one of the most significant announcements made in recent years concerning a particular topic,” the president hinted.

It’s not clear whether the naming announcement was the one he meant.

The U.S. military had already been utilizing the term Arabian Gulf in their communications and imagery.

Experts spoke to ahead of the trip floated that Trump’s big announcement was likely how much the Saudis would invest in the U.S.

The announcement regarding the Arabian Gulf will coincide with the U.S. resuming discussions with Iran, following former President Trump’s termination of the Obama-era nuclear agreement during his initial term in office.

More negotiations over nuclear issues are anticipated to occur in Oman this coming weekend.

Trump has made it clear that Iran absolutely cannot have a nuclear weapon.

I wish for Iran to achieve remarkable success, greatness, and excellence,” he stated during Sunday’s Meet the Press interview. “The sole restriction is that they cannot possess a nuclear weapon. Should they desire success, that is perfectly fine with me. My hope is indeed for their prosperity.

“I simply do not wish for them to possess a nuclear weapon since it would lead to the destruction of our world,” the president further stated.

It wasn’t instantly evident whether changing the name of the Persian Gulf would affect those plans.

His first act during the inauguration ceremony on January 20th was to announce that the Gulf of Mexico would henceforth be called the ‘Gulf of America.’

When the Associated Press refused to change the Gulf’s name in their influencial style guide, Trump pushed the wire service’s reporters and photographers out of the press ‘pool,’ the group of journalists allowed into tight spaces including the Oval Office and on Air Force One.

The White House and the AP are still involved in litigation over the matter.
