The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has eliminated 70 business and technical programs as part of an effort to introduce new courses tailored to meet the requirements of today’s students.

In a memorandum issued on Monday, May 5, the examination authority stated that as they phase out these programs, a specific cutoff date has been established for the last exams of the old Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curricula.

The circular, which was similarly shared with regional TVET directors by the Kenya National Examination Council, stated that the final exams for these non-modular programs would take place in November 2025.

The Kenya National Examination Council would like to notify all principals of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, TVET county directors, as well as sub-county education officers overseeing business and technical exams that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has been revising TVET curriculums and syllabuses since 2009.

“Upon reviewing, traditional non-modular courses have progressively been substituted with modular TVET programs,” stated KNEC CEO David Njengere in the memorandum obtained by

Njengere stressed that programs which have been phased out should cease enrolling new students following the November 2025 examinations.

Budget Excludes Exam Financing

The education system in Kenya is facing a bleak future after a KSh 62 billion cut, which left the national examinations without any funding.

Kenyan lawmakers have cautioned that parents might be required to cover the costs of exam registrations.

This implies that numerous students might not get the chance to take exams such as those conducted by KNEC, JSCE, and KCSE.
