KATH Initiates Ortho Month: Free Surgeries and Bone Health Awareness

By Yussif Ibrahim

Kumasi, May 22, GNA – The Trauma and Orthopedics Department at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has initiated Orthopedics Month. This campaign spans a month with objectives focused on enhancing public understanding about bone health and offering complimentary orthopedic surgical procedures for those requiring them.

The campaign themed “Robust Skeletons, Dynamic Days – A Celebration of Musculoskeletal Well-being” will be ongoing throughout June 2025.

This initiative heavily focuses on public education, accident prevention, and raising funds to assist disadvantaged individuals who need essential orthopedic treatment.

One key feature of the campaign is a fundraising initiative aimed at supporting surgical operations for individuals unable to pay for their treatments.

This encompasses crucial procedures like fixing fractures, reconstructing joints, and performing corrective orthopedic surgeries.

At the event’s inauguration, Dr. Abeiku Hammond, who currently leads the Trauma and Orthopedics Directorate, highlighted the critical requirement for monetary assistance.

“We encounter numerous patients who put off seeking medical help due to financial constraints. This month isn’t just about raising awareness; it’s also about taking action. With our fundraising initiatives, we aim to offer complimentary surgeries and thereby grant these individuals an opportunity for renewed, painless activity,” he stated.

Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, an orthopedic surgeon and interim head of KATH, highlighted the importance of making orthopedic care both available and budget-friendly.

He pointed out that financial difficulties frequently lead patients to delay or forgo essential care, which can exacerbate their health issues.

“As part of the hospital’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, we are providing complimentary services for those suffering from orthopedic issues, which encompasses surgical procedures. However, achieving this requires support from generous sponsors who are either individual donors or charitable organizations,” he explained.

Besides offering surgical sponsorships, the Directorate has organized various community involvement initiatives throughout the Ashanti Region. These include providing complimentary orthopedic examinations, conducting educational sessions in schools and local areas, launching media drives to promote bone health consciousness, and establishing specialized orthopedic clinics for immediate medical assistance.

As such, the hospital is appealing to individuals, corporate entities, and philanthropic organizations to support their initiative.

Contributions will directly finance operations and community initiatives, aiding in the restoration of movement and self-respect for numerous patients.
