The Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, has engaged in bilateral discussions with the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Marc Dillard, aiming to enhance strategic healthcare cooperation and evaluate current American foreign aid provided to Kenya.
The talks conducted on Wednesday centered around enhancing collaboration in crucial sectors that align with Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) initiative, such as strengthening healthcare personnel, advancing digital health solutions and information systems, addressing non-communicable diseases, improving mental health services, and tackling the interconnection between climate change and public health.
CS Duale expressed his enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration within the framework of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). This initiative aids in fortifying healthcare systems, monitoring diseases, and preparing for emergencies.
He recognized the influence of U.S.-financed initiatives like PEPFAR, USAID, and the CDC, notably in tackling diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. He also reiterated Kenya’s dedication to maintaining transparency, accountability, and integrity across all collaborative healthcare efforts.
Duale highlighted the substantial advancements achieved with this assistance, which include lowering mother-to-child HIV transmission rates from 21% in 2010 to 7.3% in 2023, as well as reducing AIDS-related fatalities from 52,000 in 2010 to 20,480 in 2023.
The United States promised ongoing backing in line with Kenya’s health priorities to enhance the nation’s healthcare infrastructure further.
CS Duale was joined by Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director of Family Health Dr. Bashir Isaak, and Head of NASCOP Dr. Andrew Mulwa.
