Almost three months following the destructive blaze that swept through the Beni Makada versi market in Tangier, officials have finished restoring approximately 200 stores with slight damages. However, rebuilding the area most heavily impacted, which includes over 80 shops, has only recently commenced.
A high-ranking municipal officer, requesting confidentiality, informed AR that “rehabilitating the Beni Makada marketplace back to its initial condition remains an arduous task.” This individual affirmed that dismantling activities have commenced within the charred area, describing this stage as the most challenging part of the restoration process.
“This stage demands significantly greater efforts and financial resources compared to those allocated for the preliminary fixes,” stated the official, declining to reveal the projected budget for the subsequent phase. “Everything is still under negotiation,” they further noted, emphasizing that talks regarding both costs and timelines remain unresolved.
The ambiguity is causing new worries among merchants, with many having previously voiced anxieties that extended shutdowns could jeopardize their businesses. Currently, most traders are running their operations out of provisional tents supplied by officials to maintain business activities.
Despite assigning the task to three different firms, those knowledgeable about the situation characterize the progress as sluggish. These holdups have generated doubt regarding the marketplace’s prospects and whether the sellers can resume their operations shortly.
There is still no official schedule for when the rebuilding process will be finished, which intensifies worries among the businessmen impacted and contributes to the market’s unclear future prospects.
