READ ON: Nationwide Urgent Recall of Tomatoes That Could BE DEADLY
A widely used dietary supplement has been pulled from shelves due to concerns about potential contamination with harmful bacteria.
Optimal Carnivore, LLC, a wellness firm, has initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 1,500 bottles of their Bone & Joint Restore supplements because they may be contaminated with salmonella.
The supplements were made available nationwide through online platforms such as Amazon and came in bottles containing 180 capsules.
The
recall
was released last month, and the
FDA
assigned it a ‘Class I’ rating on Monday, which is the agency’s most hazardous categorization.
This indicates that ‘there is a good chance the utilization or contact with a non-compliant product may lead to severe health issues or even death.’
No diseases have been documented, yet
Salmonella can lead to severe and life-threatening outcomes.
such as dehydration and infections in susceptible groups like children and the elderly.
For healthy individuals, it may lead to symptoms such as fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach ache.
The recalled items expire by December 2026 and come with the lot number 1224064.
It’s unclear exactly how the supplements were contaminated, though it’s possible the raw animal ingredients used to make them were exposed to feces.
Raw animal products are also susceptible to bacterial growth if they are kept at room temperature. The supplements are meant to be shelf stable, according to the FDA.
The supplements contain cartilage, bones and bone marrow from cows, according to the nutrition label. Each bottle of 180 capsules sells for about $67 on online retailers.
It’s unclear when the supplements were sold or exactly where they were shipped or all online retailers they were sold from.
Each year, Salmonella infects 1.3 million people in America, leads to hospitalization for approximately 26,000 individuals, and causes around 500 deaths.
The symptoms typically appear from six hours to six days following the initial contact.
Most people recover on their own, but the bacteria can cause severe dehydration from diarrhea or travel to the bloodstream, causing deadly infections.
Customers who might have purchased affected items were informed through email.
The Optimal Carnivore company has not provided instructions for getting rid of the problematic items.
Customers and medical professionals have the option to inform the FDA about negative side effects through the MedWatch Voluntary Reporting Program.
