Colombo, May 22 — In a statement to Parliament, Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced that they plan to conclude the hiring process for current teaching positions by the end of this year.
Yesterday (21), the Prime Minister stated that there are current openings for teachers in both the Sinhala and Tamil mediums across grades one to five and six to eleven. He also disclosed to Parliament the count of positions the government plans to promptly address with immediate hiring.
The current shortfall of teachers in the Sinhala medium from Grades 1 to 5 stands at 4,240 positions, whereas for the same grade levels in the Tamil medium, it amounts to 2,827 posts. For classes ranging from Grade 6 to Grade 11, the deficiency in the Sinhala medium totals 11,274 roles, compared with 6,121 openings in the Tamil medium. The Prime Minister disclosed this data during parliamentary proceedings when responding orally to a query posed by SJB Member of Parliament Mujibar Rahman.
She mentioned that there are openings for teachers in both the Sinhala-medium and Tamil-medium government schools within the Western Province, specifically for grades 1 through 5 and grades 6 through 11. There are 1,318 unfilled positions in the Sinhala-medium schools for grades 1 to 5, whereas for grades 6 to 11, the vacant spots stand at 1,325 in the Sinhala-medium sector and 397 in the Tamil-medium one.
The Prime Minister stated that the vacancies for teachers in both the Sinhala medium and Tamil medium government schools within the Colombo Education Zone for Grades 1 through 5 and Grades 6 through 11 are detailed below: There are 84 openings for teachers in the Sinhala medium for Grades 1 to 5, with an additional 85 positions available for those teaching in the Tamil medium. Furthermore, there are 226 vacant posts for instructors in the Sinhala medium covering Grades 6 to 11, whereas 140 job opportunities exist for educators working in the Tamil medium during this period.
