Babu Owino, the Embakasi East MP, has achieved another academic accomplishment for his portfolio.
The legislator has become an Advocate of the High Court after being admitted to the bar on Friday, May 23.
This achievement places him amongst the ranks of distinguished legal practitioners in the nation.
What motivated Babu Owino to pursue legal studies?
He marked the occasion by fondly reminiscing about overcoming the hurdles of his youth to attain his educational achievements.
The legislator disclosed that he came from an economically disadvantaged background, which might typically dampen one’s ambition to achieve greatness in academic circles.
His determination and self-motivation are what have brought him this far, he stated.
Babu says that his desire to pursue law studies arose from witnessing his mother’s difficulties with the police.
The member of parliament recounted how his mother frequently faced troubles with the authorities due to her alcohol business, which she managed alone to provide for their family.
Raised in the Nyalenda slums, I observed with great worry how typical Kenyans faced relentless abuse at the hands of law enforcement officers who often acted brutally without regard for these individuals’ understanding of their constitutional rights. Frequently, my mother was detained and rather than appearing before a judge, she endured beatings from policemen seeking bribes using money earned from her small-scale alcohol trade. These experiences have motivated me throughout the years to delve into and understand Kenya’s legal system and recognize its significance in ensuring fair treatment under both process-based and fundamental justice,” he stated.
The MP stated that he would leverage his newfound career as a lawyer to advocate for the rights of humble Kenyan citizens.
Babu said his mission to fight for the rights of Kenyans would be enhanced by his lawful presence in court, hence making it a double experience, having previously used the National Assembly only.
He committed to leverage his newfound position to foster societal transformation and ensure governmental accountability across key areas.
This accomplishment isn’t driven by personal ego; rather, it’s focused on refining the instruments of service. Law has become a fresh battleground where I’ll intensify my efforts towards achieving justice, fairness, and the protection of ordinary citizens’ rights. The government ought to prepare for stronger defenses advocating for Kenyans—not just within Parliament but also through judicial means. Anticipate legal actions intended to reduce the cost of living, generate employment opportunities, and ensure accountability across various systems. This transformation persists—but now adorned with a robe and wielding a gavel,” he stated.
The legislator intends to take on multiple roles.
Is Babu Owino interested in becoming an economics expert?
As a lawyer for the High Court, he is now aiming to gain proficiency in economics as well.
Currently, Babu is enrolled in a master’s program in Economics, which represents his third advanced degree.
A graduate from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Babu holds several academic qualifications.
He initially earned a degree in actuarial science, which was succeeded by obtaining a master’s degree in architectural science along with law. Furthermore, he holds an additional six diplomas.
In 2023, he received an honorary doctorate in political leadership from Weldios University located in the Benin Republic.
