Tax On Second Homes Generates £12.5M For Council

Councillors were informed that over the past year, a council tax surcharge collected from those who own secondary homes amounted to approximately £12.5 million for the Pembrokeshire council.

In reaction to a question posed by a citizen following the authority’s decision to decrease the council tax surcharge on secondary residences from 200% to 150% last October.

They likewise questioned if “there are any measures in place to safeguard against the risk that insurance premiums are established exclusively to increase the tax base,” as stated in the document.

In reply, the committee learned that the premium was not established to increase the tax base; instead, it was merely “a result.”

In October, the councillors of Pembrokshire approved to

decrease the additional council tax levied on secondary residences

reaching 150% – merely half a year following the introduction of a 200% rate – amounting to approximately £2.6 million in lost revenue.
