Kenya Unveils New National Public Health Institute

The Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, has initiated the establishment of the Kenya National Public Health Institute with the aim of enhancing disease prevention, achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and ensuring national health security.

This represents a crucial step toward improving the nation’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) via preventive and promotional care measures, as well as bolstering overall public health safety.

Under Legal Notice No. 14 from 2022, KNPHI has been set up to function as Kenya’s primary hub for monitoring diseases, conducting health-related studies, coordinating policies, and swiftly responding to emergencies.

The institution is anticipated to optimize public health operations, remove redundancies, and enhance Kenya’s preparedness and ability to address health hazards.

At the unveiling event, Hon. Duale highlighted the significance of funding robust institutions that can promptly and efficiently address public health crises.

He praised the World Bank, Africa CDC, Amref Health Africa, and IANPHI for providing both technical and financial assistance in setting up KNPHI. He also called upon the Public Service Commission to hasten the approval process of human resource tools so as to guarantee the institute’s complete operation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, Abdourahmane Diallo, reiterated WHO’s dedication to assisting Kenya in setting up a strong, autonomous, and internationally linked public health institution that corresponds with the nation’s goals.
