Israeli Ambassador Calls For Hope And Peace Amid Gaza Conflict

Accra, May 7, GNA – Mr. Roey Gilad, the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, has expressed strong belief in the possibility of peace between Israelis and Palestinians despite the current bleak state of affairs.

Mr. Gilad stressed that although the long-standing conflict had reached one of its lowest points, there remained hope for a peaceful resolution that would ensure the stability and prosperity of both nations.

Speaking at a reception in Accra to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, Mr. Gilad acknowledged the longstanding nature of the conflict but insisted that a peaceful resolution remained both necessary and achievable.

The event brought together diplomats, government officials, civil society leaders, and members of the Israeli community in Ghana to an evening of cultural elegance and diplomatic camaraderie.

The serene Movenpick Ambassador Hotel was adorned with Israeli and Ghanaian flags, softly lit by strings of lights that cast a warm glow over the gathering.

Guests mingled over a spread of Israeli delicacies, accompanied by soft traditional music that created an ambiance of reflection and celebration.

Amid the clinking of glasses and gentle laughter, conversations flowed about shared values, cooperation, and hopes for peace in the Middle East.

The ambiance was simultaneously somber and festive—celebrating a country’s path forward while gazing ahead with careful hopefulness.

This occasion, along with several others, provided an opportunity for introspection regarding Israel’s past, accomplishments, and ongoing desires for harmony and collaboration on the international stage.

Ambassador Gilad stated, “Despite how bleak things appear at present, I am convinced that the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians has the potential to—and ought to—be distinct from what we see today.”

“The dispute between us and the Palestinians has lasted over 100 years, and currently, it’s at one of its least intense phases. Nonetheless, ultimately, there needs to be a peaceful resolution that ensures stability, prosperity, and well-being for both peoples,” he asserted solemnly.

The Ambassador’s comments arise amid escalating tensions and growing humanitarian issues in the Middle East, notably in Gaza. The persistent conflict there has attracted global scrutiny and demands for an end to hostilities.

He stressed that Israel continued to be dedicated to collaborating with global allies, such as countries across Africa, to advance peace, security, and progress.

Regarding the October 7 “atrocity,” during which approximately 1,200 individuals—comprising both civilians and military personnel—were killed, Ambassador Gilad mentioned that from the initial 251 hostages detained in Gaza by Hamas militants, only 59 remained captive after 578 days filled with “anguish, suffering, and doubt.”

The 77th anniversary of Israel’s independence celebrates the nation’s establishment as a state in 1948, an event that retains significant global political impact.

In Ghana, Israel has kept robust diplomatic and developmental connections, notably in sectors like farming, tech, healthcare, cyber security, education, and interpersonal exchanges among others.

The enduring relationship with Ghana started when an office was established in Accra in 1956, just a year prior to Ghana gaining its independence.

In 1957, when Ghana achieved independence, the office was transformed into an embassy, making it the first Israeli embassy across the African continent.

Mr. Gilad observed that the bilateral relationship between Ghana and Israel has faced several hurdles, such as their distant locations from each other, a financial crisis in 2022, and the conflict Israel experienced over the past year, which altered their priority list and depleted many of their resources.

Mr Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, representing the Government of Ghana as the Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, emphasized during his address the strong and long-standing relationship between Ghana and Israel.

“It is a tremendous honor for me to be here with you today to celebrate the National Day of the State of Israel. On behalf of the government and citizens of Ghana, I would like to convey our sincere congratulations to the government and people of Israel as they commemorate this significant day,” stated the minister.

He commended Israel for its resilience and ingenuity, noting that the establishment of the State of Israel and the lasting determination of its citizens remain an inspiration to countries everywhere.

Mr. Adjei observed that Ghana and Israel have maintained a longstanding relationship characterized by friendship, mutual respect, and a common aspiration for advancement.

“Since the beginning of our nation’s independence, Israel has played a significant role as a partner in Ghana’s progress,” he stated.

He pointed out the beneficial effects of Israeli investments and knowledge in crucial areas like farming, healthcare, cyber security, and tech.

The Minister highlighted particular programs like the Ghana-Israel Agribusiness Innovation Centre (GIAC) and the pelatihan courses provided by Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV). These efforts have empowered numerous Ghanaians with essential abilities.

He also acknowledged Israel’s support through the consistent exchange of high-level visits, including the participation of Israeli officials in major national events.

The Water Resources Minister said, “As a friend of Israel, Ghana remains committed to the values of peace, dialogue and mutual understanding.”
