Poetry Corner: Kwesi B. Explores the Shadows of Kleptocracy

If you’re passionate about amassing riches

Drills holes in sacred groves

If you are unwell enough to wish for eternal rest,

Pass it all to your nearest relative now and always.

Everything which you did not work to accumulate

None of which came from your own harvest

What will lead to your demise is kleptomania.

If you cultivate the soil

Neither for green nor for grain

Yet for gold, and for barren profit

If you stuff your pockets completely full

Until it starts dripping

To let it fall not upon waiting, eager mouths

Yet into distended stomachs of excessively fed robbers

You are dealing with kleptomania.

If you find yourself consumed by unquenchable desire,

If that makes you feel to sow no seed

But to reap where you do not sow seed

If that makes you hunt money no matter the cost

To mint more coins to fill your storehouses

If you dare to end your own life

Just to own it all

You have been afflicted by Kleptomania

If your malady breeds greediness in sleepless degrees

If that malady does not feel like malarial fever

But reeks of a pecuniary flavour

If you cough out venom on those less of privileges

And you label them as lazy and cursed

And afterwards drape them around the edges

You have developed kleptomania.

If you’ve had enough of being impoverished,

And you think to reap from the poor

If you hesitate to assist the poor

But you hasten a tightened fist toward the poor

If you push a bitter pill down a poor throat

If you exhale solely to express your longing for wealth

You are ill and have been tested for kleptomania.

If you suffer from the agony of abundance,

Yet your intention is to benefit from a severe misfortune.

If you are weary from the appeals of those who suffer,

Yet you’re fixated on displaying your lifestyle.

If you watch with delight at their wickedness

Yet you distribute your riches among trivial indulgences.

You struggle with kleptomania.

If you don’t feel comfortable

Among those with modest means

If you can’t hand over as much as a dime

To serve as their economic support system

If you hide your hatred for the poor

Yet you practice how to heap compliments upon the middle class.

Then you are struggling with kleptomania.

If you make the monkey do heavy labor

For the baboon to receive the salary

If your specter claims the salary

For tasks completed by the ghost workers

If you refuse the salary

Among those who engage in genuine work

Then your disease can be diagnosed with ease.
