The renowned Nigerian actor, comedian, and filmmaker Ayo Makun, commonly referred to as AY, has utilized his influence to advise Nigerians that damaging or mistreating the naira—whether through acts like spraying, ripping, disfiguring, or misusing—is not an accepted custom but rather a breach of Nigerian legal statutes.
As per his statement, these actions compromise the purity of our country’s money and could lead to severe legal repercussions.
“Let’s all work towards maintaining the honor of our currency, a emblem of our nation’s sovereignty and economic strength. Showing regard for the Naira is showing regard for Nigeria’s future,” he posted on Instagram.
After disclosing that he had been invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) concerning an incident involving the public dispersal of both local and foreign currency notes—an action categorized as an offense linked to the misuse of the Naira—AY made his comments.
“I want to sincerely thank the EFCC and all authorities involved for their understanding and for granting me pardon based on confirmation that the money being sprayed is not linked to the proceeds of crime or any form of illicit funds.
“This encounter has served as an important lesson, and I am individually dedicated to raising awareness regarding the appropriate reverence and maintenance of our national currency,” he declared.
Actor and Director, Iyabo Ojo, shared her encounter with the EFCC earlier in the week when she received an invite while being in the UK.
The EFCC officers presented me with recordings taken from my daughter’s wedding, showing guests—such as coworkers and acquaintances—throwing Nigerian naira notes and foreign currency.
The EFCC officers stated clearly that dousing money, even on individuals’ bodies, is forbidden. It came as a surprise to me that sprinkling any form of cash, such as dollars, is likewise not permitted.
“Based on this experience, I highly recommend not spraying any money in Nigeria to prevent potential problems with the EFCC,” she penned.
