The United Arab Emirates has consented to participate in a massive natural gas pipeline initiative set to link Nigeria with Morocco and ultimately extend to Europe.
Morocco’s Minister for Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, informed legislators on Tuesday that the UAE has become one of the backers of this initiative, projected to have a price tag of around $25 billion.
“As far as financing goes, the project has received backing from the IDB, OPEC Fund, EIB, and the UAE,” she stated.
Benali further stated that Morocco has completed all necessary feasibility and engineering studies required for the pipeline project.
As per insights from Moroccan industry professionals, the initiative has successfully cleared the feasibility study phase along with the Front End Engineering Design stage.
The “African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline” will link Nigeria’s gas infrastructure with Morocco’s southern town of Dakhla before continuing north towards Europe.
The route will traverse 15 African nations, enhancing trade, development, and regional access to electricity.
During Phase One, this initiative will connect Morocco with natural gas fields close to Senegal and Mauritania, as well as link up Ghana with Côte d’Ivoire.
In Phase Two, Nigeria will be connected to Ghana, whereas Phase Three will link the Ivory Coast with Senegal.
Specialists indicated that this pipeline will assist in delivering increased electricity to African households and enterprises, thereby fostering economic collaboration throughout the area.
Over 400 million individuals reside alongside its path, making the pipeline a crucial catalyst for enhancing regional cooperation, fostering industrial expansion, and upgrading infrastructure.
Morocco and Nigeria have established a collaborative enterprise to oversee the project.
They entered into a funding pact previously to expedite its progress.
China’s Jingye Steel Group has secured the contract to provide pipes for the project.
Stretching over 6,800 kilometers with 5,100 kilometers laid underwater, this pipeline will be recognized as the most extensive offshore natural gas pipeline globally upon completion.
Benali mentioned that Morocco is striving to emerge as a leading nation in clean energy within the region, showcasing significant potential for generating green hydrogen along with other forms of renewable resources.
