Fluor Extends Healthcare Reach for Cocoa Farmers Worldwide

Fludor Ghana Limited, a member of Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group, has expanded its healthcare insurance coverage for cocoa farmers and their households across Ghana with a vision to improve the quality of life of cocoa farmers, strengthen its cocoa supply chain and meet regional and international certification standards, policies, and regulations.

Fludor aims to promote a more wholesome cocoa industry by focusing on the well-being of farmers, cocoa trees and their plantations, local communities, and the surrounding ecosystem.

Launched in partnership with Elucid Social in 2023, Fludor’s healthcare coverage initiative, part of its “Apomuden Project,” aims to provide cocoa farmers and their families with access to affordable healthcare across multiple regions in Ghana.

Through this initiative, Fludor has registered over 266 households, comprising nearly 1000 individuals, in Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This all-encompassing healthcare support provides access to emergency aid, maternal care funding, and vital medications. It also aids in enhancing cocoa production efficiency and stabilizing incomes, thereby decreasing the likelihood of child labor and forest depletion.

Maria Christodoulou, Head of Cocoa Sustainability, Fludor Ghana Limited, has emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Establishing agricultural supply chains where farmers’ health is prioritised is fundamental for their access to decent work and income. Elucid’s work in pioneering health standards in cocoa supply chains is remarkable and we are thrilled to join forces to improve human health in our cocoa supply chain.”

Richard Osei Kuffour, who directs operations for West Africa at Elucid, emphasized the wider effects of their initiative: “By working together on this healthcare project, we bolster Ghana’s nationwide healthcare framework and safeguard farmers’ household earnings by reducing direct medical costs. Participants will additionally benefit from access to an emergency and maternity care fund, which improves both their overall health and agricultural output.”

During the second year of the health initiative, Fludor intends to include additional local healthcare centers, thereby extending its outreach to an even greater number of cocoa-growing villages.

Fludor’s collaboration with Elucid is just one example of the various alliances they are utilizing to bolster their sustainability initiative. Additionally, Fludor has joined forces with VisionSpring, a global social business aiming to enhance cocoa farmers’ vision health and earning capacity via their See toEarn program.

This initiative has assisted 4,805 people spread across 12 cocoa-growing regions within Fludor’s operational area. It provided glasses to 45%, medications to 68%, and referred 20% to local healthcare facilities for additional evaluation.

“Apomuden,” meaning “good health” in Twi, reflects Fludor’s commitment to health as a central part of its sustainability strategy. Promoting health is fundamental to addressing the sector’s salient issues and achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily SDG #3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) and SDG #1 (No Poverty).

Established by the TGI Group in 2014, Fludor Ghana Limited focuses on procuring, internally trading, and promoting cocoa, cashew, and soy products. The firm collaborates with funders and chocolatiers to improve the lives of farmers, foster entrepreneurship skills, and maintain a steady source of high-quality cocoa.
