Coffee Chain Leads the Way: First to Transform Vacant Store

A planning proposal has been filed for an abandoned key structure in the city center that has remained unoccupied for over ten years.

Jamaica Blue, a chain of eating cafes, is set to occupy a portion of the Grimwades building located on Cornhill in Ipswich. This space has remained unoccupied since 2012.

The organization has filed an application with Ipswich Borough Council for external repair and renovation work.

The council leader, Neil MacDonald, expressed his joy stating he was “delighted” about the reopening of the facility, whereas Michael Johnson from Jamaica Blue conveyed his excitement mentioning he was “thrilled.”

Last month, the council obtained ownership of the building, and Jamaica Blue would manage operations out of one of the two spaces inside it.

The council mentioned that several inquiries have been made regarding the other unit and expressed confidence that a deal will be finalized shortly.

The final business to use the space was Clinton Cards, and it is anticipated that the incoming tenants will be able to open their doors later this year.

“I am confident that the residents will be thrilled to witness how quickly developments are progressing with regard to the Grimwades building. It’s wonderful news that they can now envision what it might look like when it becomes inhabited,” MacDonald stated.

I’m pleased that we’ve submitted a planning application for the initial unit among the two.

He mentioned that if accepted, Jamaica Blue would contribute to generating “a buzz of people and vibrancy” within the town center.

Mr. Johnson, the franchise development executive at Jamaica Blue, mentioned that they were looking forward to introducing the brand to Ipswich.

“I am excited to share the Jamaica Blue experience with an even greater number of communities in the coming months,” he stated.
