Edward Ato Sarpong, the Managing Director of Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) PLC, has urged students studying agriculture to adopt entrepreneurship and innovation as vital instruments for reshaping Ghana’s agricultural business sector.
As part of this year’s Agricultural Students’ Career Guidance and Mentorship Dialogue (AG-STUD) Boot Camp, he initiated the call.
The boot camp, organized by the Agrihouse Foundation with sponsorship from ADB, gathers students from different agricultural institutions across the country to link up with industry experts and nurture their entrepreneurial development.
As part of the week-long event, both the students and organizers made a courtesy visit to the administration of ADB.
During his speech, Ato Sarpong encouraged the students to change their perspective from conventional, small-scale farming to adopting agripreneurship—a contemporary method that incorporates innovation, technology, value enhancement, and sustainability within the agricultural sector.
“You aren’t merely agriculture students; you are the future leaders shaping Ghana’s agricultural value chain. The importance of your contribution to developing a robust and contemporary agribusiness sector can’t be overstated,” he emphasized.
Ato Sarpong highlighted the essential requirement for young people to lead initiatives aimed at reshaping sectors such as agriculture and entrepreneurship. He encouraged attendees to leverage resources like AG-STUD to enhance their abilities, connect with experienced advisors, and cultivate scalable enterprises capable of generating jobs and fostering economic growth.
The Managing Director of ADB reiterated the institution’s dedication to supporting young people via specialized funding, skill development programs, and internships, emphasizing that AG-STUD plays a crucial role in connecting theoretical knowledge with real-world experience.
We also plan to introduce new financing initiatives alongside our Student Savers Account,” he revealed, “These programs aim to facilitate easier access to funds for agriculture students as well as youthful business starters within the agricultural sector and various critical areas of the economy.
Kwame Asiedu Attrams, who oversees Agribusiness at ADB, mentioned that the organization takes pride in continuing their sponsorship of the AG-STUD Boot Camp. This initiative underscores the bank’s dedication to supporting a fresh wave of entrepreneurs focused on agribusiness, aiming to foster wealth creation and drive economic progress.
The Executive Director of Agrihouse Foundation, Alberta Akorsa, expressed gratitude towards ADB for their ongoing support of AG-STUD programs, as well as their contributions to agricultural education and entrepreneurship within Ghana.
The Agricultural Science Students’ Boot Camp this year, concluding on May 9, 2025, has welcomed 125 participants chosen through a competitive process from among 23 institutions nationwide. These include various universities and agricultural colleges throughout the country.
