Jose Mourinho
Currently at the helm of Fenerbahce, his contract with the Turkish Super Lig club extends for another season. However, this hasn’t prevented him from hinting at his next venture into football management.
At 62 years old, he has placed Fenerbahce second in the Super Lig standings, yet he frequently appears displeased. His first season leading the team seems likely to conclude without a trophy. You can’t shake the impression that he is already contemplating his future plans.
We’ve compiled all of Mourinho’s comments regarding his future position.
A return to England
“I believe the most sensible approach for me would be to join a team that does not participate in UEFA competitions once my time at Fenerbahce comes to an end,” Mourinho stated to journalists following his dismissal during Fenerbahce’s Europa League match against Manchester United in October.
If any team at the bottom of the English league table requires a coach within the next two years, I am prepared to take on the role.
I don’t wish to elaborate further on that topic. Instead, let me talk about the game. We performed exceptionally well against the team that was supposedly at a higher level. Our performance was outstanding.
He doesn’t come across as particularly eager to prolong his time in Turkey once his present contract concludes at the end of the upcoming season. However, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if he departs from Fenerbahce earlier than expected and becomes available for transfer.
Mourinho has not named any particular teams, but
Recently, Leeds United have been rumored
amid speculations about Daniel Farke’s future.
Leeds has publicly supported Farke to guide them through the Premier League, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he leaves his position during the initial months of next season.
Rangers
In March, Mourinho was questioned straightforwardly regarding rumors connecting him to Rangers following their anticipated summer takeover.
“At this point, no, since I have a job that inspires me and one that requires dedication. However, could it be possible in the future?” he stated to the journalists.
Others might claim that the Scottish league consists of only two prominent teams, yet it thrives with passion. Passion is what defines this league. For me, fervor in football is paramount.
For me, performing in empty stadiums and participating in competitions without the fervor of passionate fans doesn’t hold any appeal.
And Celtic and Rangers, these are major teams with substantial supporter bases, evoking strong emotions, bearing significant responsibilities, and facing high expectations. Why not?
Bringing Mourinho into an Old Firm derby? Let’s do it.
Newcastle United
“Regarding Newcastle, I have absolutely nothing to say,” Mourinho replied at a press conference after the club’s takeover in October 2021.
“The only thing I can say is that for many, many years, I worked with one of the most important figures in the history of Newcastle, Sir Bobby Robson, and so because of that I have always had a bit of an emotional connection with that city and that fanbase. But it’s nothing more than that.”
Just as how things were at Manchester United during Ferguson’s tenure, that statement seemed very much likeJose sowing the seeds for potential future scenarios.
After Eddie Howe’s impressive performance in the League Cup, he seems secure at St. James’ Park for now. However, anticipate that Mourinho’s name will likely surface whenever the position opens up again.
Portugal
“The statement from the FPF’s president that I wasn’t just one of his choices, but the sole choice, fills me with pride,” Mourinho shared with the media in January 2023.
But I chose not to go. I’m in Roma, and that’s all that counts.
Roberto Martinez secured the position and has an agreement with Portugal that lasts until the upcoming summer World Cup. However, Mourinho could likely step in for the subsequent phase.
I believe my emotions got the better of me when I chose not to leave and stayed at Roma. In hindsight, I realize it might have been a misstep,” he told EA Sports Korea during an interview. “Both Portugal and their team showed interest in me twice, and I feel they will do so again someday. At that point, I intend to reconsider.
He’ll be 67 during the 2030 World Cup – which will partially take place in his home country of Portugal – and that seems just right, doesn’t it?
Brazil
“I’m not sure if Brazil actually wants me,” Mourinho stated to reporters in January 2024.
They have not communicated with me. I requested my agent not to inform me of any inquiries.
It appears Carlo Ancelotti is poised to be the inaugural foreign coach for the Selecao once he leaves his position at Real Madrid. However, talks about a potentially substantial proposal from a Saudi Pro League team could complicate this arrangement.
Could Mourinho step into the competition if Don Carlo bows out? Definitely someone to keep an eye on.
Chelsea
“If you ask me whether there’s someone I’d like to see take over at ‘my Chelsea,’ then yes, there is, but I keep quiet about it,” Mourinho said to Sky Sports when commenting on the pressures Graham Potter faced in 2023.
“The club reached such a level that it doesn’t matter who it’s with but Chelsea will always be Chelsea,
Chelsea will forever remain significant, and my home will continue to be just 200 meters from the stadium. Therefore, I wish to carry on hearing the sounds of joy and triumph. I am quite certain this will persist.
