The inauguration of the UDS Governing Council took place, emphasizing a robust appeal to its members to collaborate effectively in maintaining the institution’s distinct character while advancing its educational programs and infrastructure enhancement plans.
During the inaugural event conducted in the University’s Council Chamber, Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu relayed President John Mahama’s vote of confidence and faith in the council’s honesty and expertise.
President Mahama requested me to communicate to you his complete faith and trust in both your honesty and the extensive and varied experience each of you brings as council members,” he stated. “He also urged you all to strive towards maintaining the university’s distinct identity.
Mr. Iddrisu praised the university for its accomplishments throughout the years, highlighting that it has substantially supported national progress by developing crucial talent.
He encouraged the newly formed council to honor the traditions set by previous councils and sustain the university’s standing and quality.
The council is led by Ambassador Alhaji Abdullah Salifu. Its membership also includes Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan, who serves as the Vice-Chancellor of UDS; Dr. Fatima Iddrisu Abu and Dr. Arnold Mashud, both senior lecturers at Tamale Technical University; Madam Magdalene Awinyeliya Kanae; and Prof. Edmund Muonir Der.
The additional members include Dr. Yaa Nyarko Adjeso; Professor Mamudu Abunga Akugudu, who serves as the UTAG President; Mr. Bruce Kambotun; Mr. Mohammed Abdulai Gonazoo; Professor Terry Ansah, the president of UDS Alumni; Mr. Emmanuel Asampana; Mrs. Abiba Nyar; and Mr. Alhassan Issah Dokurugu.
Mr. Iddrisu reaffirmed the government’s dedication to promoting research within higher education institutions via the implementation of the National Research Fund. He commended UDS for narrowing the educational advancement divide between the northern and southern regions, underscoring its distinctive role.
