The recently named CEO of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Dr. Toni Aubynn, made his inaugural official trip to Jomoro in the Western Region, which is being considered as the location for Ghana’s primary Petroleum Hub initiative.
Dr. Aubynn, who was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama, was accompanied by his deputies, Onasis Rosely and Halimatu Sadia Abdulai Abu, along with other senior PHDC officials.
The visit marked his inaugural working tour since taking office and follows a recent engagement with the Western Regional House of Chiefs.
The purpose of the visit was to strengthen cooperation with local participants, notably traditional chiefs and inhabitants of Jomoro, as the administration progresses with the development of the extensive petroleum facility initiative.
The delegation’s initial visit was to the palace of Awulae Annor Adjaye III, who serves as the President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council and is also the founding Board Chairman of PHDC.
At both closed and open-door gatherings, Dr. Aubynn reaffirmed the administration’s strong dedication to the initiative. “Our presence here signifies a mission rather than mere pledges,” stated Dr. Aubynn.
He added: “This project will not be abandoned. It is central to the President’s vision, and we are committed to seeing it through”.
The CEO of PHDC likewise called upon the chiefs and residents for ongoing support, promising them that PHDC is dedicated to obtaining funds for compensating landowners as well as achieving crucial project benchmarks.
Approximately 20,000 acres of land have been designated for the hub. As Ghana strives to be the first African nation to establish an integrated petroleum and petrochemical center, Dr. Aubynn compared this ambition to turning Jomoro into the ‘Rotterdam of Africa’.
To address local issues, he highlighted that the company will focus on employing people from nearby areas, starting with the launch of a skill-building program designed to ready young individuals for positions in construction, technical functions, and assistance roles.
Our primary duty is to the residents of Jomoro,” he stated. “President Mahama has emphasized that development should start with those nearest to the project.
On behalf of Awule Annor Adjaye III, Nana Avo Nwia, the Chief of Tikobo Number 2 and a representative on the Traditional Council’s Standing Committee, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Aubynn and his team.
“I am completely confident in your guidance,” he stated. “The success you’ve achieved within the extraction industry is evident. Our sole request is prompt handling of remuneration, allowing our agricultural community to secure their future plans accordingly.”
The PHDC group subsequently stopped at the project office in Nawule to interact with the staff and assess the current activities. They were shown around the premises by experienced community outreach coordinators, during which Dr. Aubynn commended the workers for their dedication.
A preliminary discussion was held, gathering heads from impacted areas along with young delegates. Among the local figures present were leaders like Nana Nyamekeh Annor IV of Bonyere—a principal community within the designated project area—who pressed for incorporating indigenous knowledge into the advancement initiatives.
This is a unique chance,” Nana Nyamekeh stated. “Our young people are eager to get involved in the workforce. We endorse this initiative, however, we urge you to follow through and involve us thoroughly.
The young individuals present expressed hopefulness regarding the employment opportunities anticipated from the initiative and appreciated Dr. Aubynn’s commitment to prioritize Jomoro locals for both hiring and skill development programs.
The visit concluded with a tour from Bonyere to Old Kabenlasuazo, allowing the delegation an up-close view of the land allocated for the Petroleum Hub.
For Dr. Aubynn, the trip held more significance than mere symbolism; it conveyed a clear message of determination. “We have embarked upon an extended voyage,” he stated. “However, with your backing, we shall reach a destination that ensures enduring progress for both this area and our nation of Ghana.”
