Nigeria and Brazil Prepare to Sign Landmark Bilateral Air Service Agreement

Nigeria and Brazil are poised to enhance their aviation connections as they approach the implementation of a Bilateral Air Service Agreement between them.

PUNCH Online indicates that the agreement might soon create a direct airline connection between the two countries.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, revealed this information on his official X account on Wednesday.

“Yesterday, alongside my team, I met with Mr. Silvio Costa Filho, the Brazilian Minister ofPorts and Airports, in the Federative Republic of Brazil,” Keyamo said.

Keyamo mentioned that both sides reviewed their long-standing connections and recognized the critical necessity of strengthening aviation relationships.

“We crossed paths in Brasília, which serves as the capital of Brazil. During our meeting, we reminisced about the longstanding historical and cultural ties shared by both nations and addressed the necessity of eliminating various obstacles that have hindered the establishment of a comprehensive BILATERAL AIR SERVICES AGREEMENT between us. Consequently, we promptly established a collaborative task force aimed at drafting an agreement, hoping for completion within the coming months,” he stated.

This serves as a prelude to establishing a direct air connection between the two nations.

In addition to BASA, the ministers delved into wider possibilities for cooperation.

“We additionally explored potential spheres of collaboration between the two nations within the realm of aviation and aerospace advancement,” Keyamo noted.

The possible accord is viewed as a strategic step that might enhance tourism, commerce, and cultural interchange between Nigeria and Brazil, which are among the biggest economic powers in the Global South.

Remember that in October 2024, Nigeria started talks with Brazil’s ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Garcete, aiming to revive the bilateral air service agreement between the two nations and launch direct flights.

The meeting comes after an Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two countries in 2018, designed to enhance aviation links and foster economic collaboration.

When discussing the significance of non-stop flights, the ambassador emphasized the possibility of initiating air services right away, pointing out that each country might support between 4 to 5 weekly routes.

“The introduction of direct flights will spark significant economic growth between our countries,” he stated.

He also mentioned the need to finalise the Open Skies Agreement to fully enable the proposed flights.

Keyamo added that once the agreement is finalised, Air Peace and Caverton have been designated to operate the route.
