When it came to harvest time, her partner told her that the rains had destroyed everything, but deep down, she believes there was for farming at all
Following seven years of employment in housekeeping in Saudi Arabia, 39-year-old Wawira Ngungi came back to Kenya in November 2024.
The young woman came home under heartbreaking circumstances to bury her mother, who succumbed to cancer.
Speaking to
.co.ke,
Wawira revealed that she had been supporting her mother’s medical treatment from abroad and had hoped to start afresh upon her return.
“Life in Saudi Arabia was good. I had a kind employer, and I was able to cater for my mom’s treatment,” she shared.
However, her return was met with misfortune. After her mother’s burial, she used the little savings she had left to start a small business, but it failed to take off.
To make ends meet, she decided to engage in a farming business she had earlier ventured into during her time overseas.
She revealed that she got into growing melons alongside an individual she met online through a mutual acquaintance.
“When harvest time arrived, I was informed that the rain had ruined everything. However, deep inside me, I feel that there wasn’t actually any farming happening in the first place,” Wawira shared.
She lost KSh 400,000, and after many efforts to get the money back, she continues to feel annoyed and stuck.
Wawira clings to the hope that she will someday receive repayment, yet nothing has come through thus far, pushing her close to surrendering.
Currently, lacking a steady stream of income and uncertain about what steps to take next, Wawira finds herself in an indefinite waiting period.
