EFCC Interrogates Iyabo Ojo Over Currency Spraying Scandal at Daughter’s Wedding

Iyabo Ojo, the Nollywood star and director, has finally spoken out after being invited by the EFCC concerning the incident involving cash sprinkling at her daughter’s recent marriage ceremony.

Ojo stated through an Instagram post that she complied with the EFCC’s request and went to their Lagos branch on May 5, 2025, following her return from the UK.

Her statement follows extensive public speculation and worry about her reported interrogation by the anticorruption authority.

Ojo mentioned that she chose to make the incident public because of the large number of phone calls and messages she got from fans and colleagues asking for updates and information regarding her wellbeing.

While visiting, she mentioned being interviewed about her origins, professional journey, entrepreneurial endeavors, as well as specifics regarding the events at her daughter’s wedding.

Ojo was surprised when authorities told her that spraying money—be it naira or foreign currency such as dollars—is illegal according to Nigerian legislation.

The EFCC officers presented me with recordings taken from my daughter’s wedding video, showing guests—such as coworkers and acquaintances—throwing both Nigerian naira and foreign currency notes.

I was questioned about whether I was aware that this was unlawful, and I clarified that I believedonly the abuse or alteration of the Naira constituted a violation.

The EFCC officers stated clearly that dousing money, even on individuals’ bodies, is forbidden. It came as a surprise to discover that sprinkling any form of currency, such as dollars, is likewise banned. Following the interrogation, I was permitted to depart on the same day; however, my individual legal counsel, O.I. Salami, might stand in for me should I be summoned once more.

Based on this experience, I highly recommend refraining from spraying any money in Nigeria to steer clear of problems with the EFCC.

“Perhaps it’s time to reconsider this long-standing tradition. Let’s prioritise caution and avoid any potential problems. Thank you, Alice Iyabo Ojo”.

The EFCC has in recent times intensified efforts to clamp down on naira abuse and money spraying, especially at social gatherings, following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s broader campaign to preserve the integrity of the national currency.
