The phrase “
under the guise of content
has rapidly turned into a key that unlocks nearly everything done online.

Ranging from lighthearted gags and satires to intensely personal confessions, content creators on various online platforms constantly challenge limits—often aiming for influence, frequently seeking recognition, but occasionally suffering significant consequences as well.

The other day, as I drove by a bustling street, I noticed a crowd of youngsters capturing what appeared to be a comedy sketch.

They were adorned in various peculiar outfits, evidently aiming to create something amusing or shareable online. Upon closer inspection, I recognized that they were setting up a practical joke.

It was noisy, disorganized, and frankly, somewhat hazardous given the roadway and the unwary pedestrians.

Afterward, as I browsed through my social media feeds, I observed a trend: numerous similar videos inundating everyone’s timelines. Many of these clips featured public pranks, humorous skits, or stunt performances.

Although they could be entertaining occasionally, they simultaneously sparked a more profound worry for me—what exactly are we accomplishing under the guise of producing content?

Entertainment vs. Ethics

Entertainment has consistently been an integral aspect of human culture. We employ narrative, theater, and comedy as means to forge connections with one another.

Contemporary content producers have embraced this digital transformation. Nonetheless, the velocity and reach of digital platforms imply that information disseminates quickly, with consequences—either positive or negative—that can escalate within mere moments.

Undoubtedly, individuals are capitalizing on their creative output and even establishing careers through this means. This development deserves praise. However, once we begin compromising our privacy, ethical standards, and security merely for the sake of amusement or to boost our follower count, we venture into perilous territory.

Entertaining is one matter; putting someone at risk is quite another.

Whatever Happened to Privacy?

In the 1980s and 1990s, there existed certain limits—that was when individuals generally refrained from crossing particular lines, particularly in public settings.

In the past, family issues were kept within the family. Embarrassing moments remained unrecorded. Failures went unpublished. Even joys had boundaries. Nowadays, little remains confidential. Social media has erased distinctions between public and private life, transforming ordinary experiences into virtual melodramas.

Simply because the means to disclose every detail are available does not imply that we should reveal everything. Sharing excessive personal information under the guise of being informative—such as divulging family confidences, inner disputes, relational issues, or even your child’s intimate experiences—can have lasting repercussions. While you could receive immediate praise, this action might lead to losing respect, confidence, or potential prospects in the future.

Indeed, the internet has an impeccable memory. Many people are starting to realize this the difficult way.

Content Creation with Caution

Let’s make this explicit: content creation is not inherently negative. Actually, it stands as one of the strongest methods for educating, inspiring, and impacting others. However, just like all forms of power, it needs to be wielded ethically. Prior to pressing “record” or “publish,” each content producer ought to consider:

– What is the objective of this material?

– Who is this intended for?

– Which values does it endorse?

— Is it consistent with my brand or values?

– Could this harm anyone—at some point now or in the future?

When aiming for widespread attention, people often overlook essential inquiries. Rather than focusing on enduring principles, we follow current fads and replicate what appears to attract more likes and views. However, trends are fleeting. Your core values, identity, and reputation—are meant to last over time.

Fashionable Isn’t Necessarily Correct

TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube—all these platforms flourish due to trend cycles. However, not all trends deserve our attention; some can be extremely hazardous, while others may be highly unsuitable. Therefore, as people, particularly those who have an audience, we should exercise careful judgment.

Educational material, stimulating concepts, narratives, and values-based video content may not always achieve widespread popularity. However, these types of content establish authority, foster reliability, and create lasting impact. Consider future generations; should their only exposure be through dance clips, comedy sketches, and contrived disorder, what ambitions could they develop? What examples are we setting for them?

The key term is balance. We require material that entertains, indeed, yet simultaneously enlightens, inspires, and provokes thought. It should offer more than mere amusement; it should impart knowledge as well.

Mentorship Through Media

In my role as a coach and mentor, I’ve observed how content influences young individuals’ choices. They often emulate lifestyles portrayed online—from fashion choices and beliefs to social interactions. Consuming predominantly superficial or exaggerated material can lead them down a similar path of triviality and sensationalism.

We require content producers who can serve as mentors—individuals focused not only on short-term benefits but also on the lasting impact on their audience. These creators should inspire others with principles like values, honesty, development, and accountability.

Everything shouldn’t be compromised just for likes.

Brand Identity in the Digital Era

For both individual and corporate brands, content strategy shouldn’t merely focus on current trends. Instead, it should be guided by purpose, direction, and value.

Ask yourself:

– What kind of online culture is your brand fostering?

– Does your online presence accurately represent your genuine purpose?

– Are you pursuing viral success, or focusing on creating value?

Each posting, each campaign, and every form of content must embody your core values. Avoid sharing merely because others are doing so. Do not produce work solely because it’s gaining attention for others. Prioritize strategic planning, meaningful influence, and long-term viability instead.

The content should reflect your vision, not merely your ego.

Digital Inheritance and Social Assets

A lot of individuals pursue “social capital”—the combination of renown, power, and wealth acquired through online popularity. Indeed, content has the potential to provide these benefits. However, ensure that accumulating this capital does not come at the expense of your integrity.

There is room for making money and gaining popularity. However, approach these goals wisely. Whatever you share now might affect you adversely or beneficially in a decade. The online world keeps records of all your activities. Gradually, your digital reputation takes shape through each post you make.

Before publishing that sketch, joke, or admission, take a moment to reflect:

– Is this helpful?

– Is this harmful?

— Will I feel proud about this decision in five years?

Your Life, Their Lives—It Matters

Creating content is no longer an individual endeavor. Regardless of your preference, your work impacts others—particularly when you involve your kids, your partner, your colleagues, or even random individuals in public settings.

We’ve encountered numerous instances where children become upset with their parents for sharing their childhood memories publicly. Alternatively, we have witnessed relationships ending due to excessive information being posted online. Additionally, some businesses have crumbled following a virally negative incident.

Let’s get back to producing mindful, ethical content. May your online presence be characterized by wisdom, creativity, and accountability.

In the Midst of Chaos, Become an Echo

We live in a loud world where everybody seems to be chatting, disclosing, and uploading content. However, not all of these communications hold value. Aim to create a distinctive voice rather than merely repeating what others say. Differentiate yourself by endorsing meaningful causes.

Create content that:

– Inspires and informs

– Uplifts and educates

— Merges enjoyment with significance

– Protects, not exploits

– Creates a lasting impact, not merely popularity

Make your online persona one that your kids can admire, that your clients find reliable, and that educates your audience.

Revisit Your Strategy

This is an excellent moment to reassess your content strategy. If you’re a creator, brand, or business owner, take another look at your guidelines. Conduct a thorough examination of your postings. Pose challenging queries. Then refine your approach with clear intent and direction.

Allow your content to draw viewers not only for attention but also to provide valuable insights.

For the sake of content, proceed with care.
