Airtel Kenya has launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered spam alert service, which will be available to all its subscribers at no cost.

The service will promptly notify customers whenever unwelcome messages appear on their devices.

The alerts will go to customers with smartphones as well as those with feature phones that are easily available to acquire in the market.

It doesn’t necessitate any extra app installations and is automatically enabled for all Airtel subscribers.

“The AI-driven spam alert system represents an unprecedented offering within Kenya’s marketplace, underscoring our commitment to pioneering innovations designed to elevate customer satisfaction. Through this advanced AI-enhanced feature, we aim to empower our clients with heightened awareness against fraudulent activities on their devices, thereby enhancing their interaction with our offerings,” stated the company’s Managing Director Ashish Malhotra in a recently circulated declaration.

Spam messages are those unwanted by subscribers. These usually originate from fraudsters and scammers.

These messages often involve social engineering tactics and can result in the extraction of personal information, dissemination of malicious software, and fraudulent financial activities targeting gullible mobile users.

Additionally, the spam messages include unsolicited promotional advertisements that tend to be irritating.

As mobile phone usage grows in Kenya, spam messages have proliferated, affecting a larger population of naive recipients.

Hundreds of thousands of Kenyans often receive unsolicited nagging promotional messages or calls.

Further, they also receive duping messages and calls from con artists who have mastered the art of stealing from unsuspecting individuals.

How spammers lure subscribers

These communications prompt users to click on links and share personal details, potentially resulting in fraud. At present, customers depend on external applications to identify spam messages.

Moreover, the software notifies customers about harmful web links they receive through messages. To achieve this, a central repository of banned URLs is kept up-to-date, allowing the AI system to scan each incoming SMS instantly and alert users to avoid potentially dangerous links.
